Venezia Jazz Festival: third edition to start 23 July

Outstanding international stars and a range of attractive events are the main features of the Venezia Jazz Festival, now in its third edition. Regarded as the jewel in the crown of the Veneto Jazz calendar, the Venice Jazz Festival is scheduled for 23 July to 1 August 2010. Artists of international fame, emerging talent, innovative offerings of the jazz scene alongside top headliners, Venice Jazz Festival is the high point of the city’s cultural programs, having already hosted stars like Bobby McFerrin, Wynton Marsalis and Paolo Conte. The line-up includes a series of concerts in the prestigious Teatro La Fenice, in Piazza San Marco and in other significant areas around the city, with a number of collateral events that will take place in locations and in the public “campi” around Venice, according to a formula involving the audience in varying hours of the day and night.
The Pat Metheny Group will open the festival at Piazza San Marco. The group founded in 1977 by one of the most successful and critically acclaimed jazz and New Age musicians return to Italy after five years. Piazza San Marco is also the venue for the performance of the talented American singer-songwriter Norah Jones. She presents her new album “The Fall”.
Paco de Lucia will perform his latest work “Cositas Buenas” at Teatro La Fenice on 29 July. During his 50-year long career the virtuoso flamenco guitarist has successfully crossed over into other genres of music and boasts collaborations with such leading jazz musicians as Chick Corea, Al di Meola and John McLaughin, just to mention a few. The pianist Riccardo Arrighini will be at the Istituto della Pietà di Venezia on 25 July with a show combining jazz with classical music. On 26 July the Duck Baker Trio is at Venice's Fondazione Peggy Guggenheim. The London-based musician will offer a show combining music from the Irish and Celtic traditions with blues and jazz. Finally, on 27 July the Esperanza Spalding 4tet and Yamandu Costa will perform at Teatro La Fenice.
The artistic offerings of the Venezia Jazz Festival are not limited to music, but are enhanced by art exhibits, readings, themed conferences and gastronomic events. The special project “Sulle strade dell’avventura” is one of these. The event is dedicated to the Italian comic book creator Hugo Pratt and features live music and a photography exhibition. The venue for the exhibition (held from 17 July to 1 August) is the Ristorante Gran Caffè Quadri di Venezia while the concert, featuring Paolo Fresu and Daniele Di Bonaventura, is at Palazzo Grassi on 1 August, starting 9.30pm.
